Pampa emergency preparedness

Posted: Updated:

Pampa, TX -- Following any disaster there is usually an enormous influx of donated resources - and the city of Pampa is practicing handling the influx of human resources.

Pampa's Office of Emergency Management spent the morning rehearsing the operation of the Volunteer Reception Center, or VRC.  In the event of a disaster, the VRC will coordinate volunteers to use them as effectively as possible for both manual labor and communication.

Director of Public Works Donny Hooper says such drills are necessary to ensure quick and appropriate reaction when the situation arises.

"It benefits us because it gives us an opportunity to prepare and to see ahead of time, so that when something does come our way, it's not surprising to us, and we're not trying to figure out the nuts and bolts of it; we already know pretty much what we're going to do and how we're going to do it, and we go and get the job done," says Hooper.

As part of today's and other drills, Pampa residents may receive text messages or tweets while officials practice their response. Those alerts will state that it is only a drill to avoid confusion.
