Abortion bill debate coming to an end

Posted: Updated:

Texas - Today the debate over tougher abortion restrictions could end.

Republicans are one step closer to a victory.

The measure passed through a Senate committee Thursday.

Now the bill returns to the Senate Friday for a vote.

Republicans insist the restrictions would guarantee better health care for women and fetuses.

Critics on the other hand, see it as a way of regulating all Texas abortion clinics out of business.

Only 37 out of 42 existing abortion clinics across the state qualify as ambulatory surgical centers.

Some clinic owners say they can't afford to upgrade or relocate their facilities.

The one thing both sides can agree on is that abortion-rights groups will file a federal lawsuit if Governor Rick Perry signs the bill into law.
