Quartz Mountain Fire Update

Posted: Updated:

ALTUS, Okla._The Quartz Mountain State Park Lodge that was evacuated Saturday after it was threatened by a grassfire has reopened after firefighters contained the fire late Saturday night.

Saturday around 3:45 p.m. nearly two dozen fire departments were called to help battle the Greer County fire located in its southeast corner near state highway 44 and 44a.

Saturday night emergency officials estimated five thousand acres burned, at one point coming within a mile of the lodge near Lugert Lake. A highway was shut down along with several county roads and threatened the evacuation of a neighborhood. Firefighters remained on scene monitoring hot spots until about 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

Sunday morning, fire officials said there were still several smoldering trees and brush and were counting on Sunday's rain to extinguish it all together.
