SW OK Highway Named After Former Senator

SNYDER Okla_ A long time lawmaker from Southwest Oklahoma now has a permanent marker honoring all of his years of public service.

Retired Senator Gilmer Capps of Snyder was there Thursday, when a portion of Highway 183 was renamed the "Senator Gilmer Capps Highway". The Snyder democrat was instrumental in getting the stretch from Snyder to Frederick made into a four-lane highway.

Kiowa Chamber Member Dean Holland helped do the honors.

"Senator Capps is a staple in Southwest Oklahoma to have helped us with so many things over the years," Holland said. "He was just down to earth, always looking for our opinion in any of the bills that were coming up, and he really wanted our input. He really did. He voted like his constituents wanted him to."

"He was a democrat, and I was a republican," Representative Don Armes said. "He kind of looked at Southwest Oklahoma as #1 and party as #2, which I always admired."

Capps said he was proud of what he was able to do for Southwest Oklahoma over his 36 years, including getting the space port at burns flat built. These days, his life is not quite as busy.

"I'm glad to have been around 36 years, but I'm glad to be out and relax a little," Capp said.

Capps is also a third-generation farmer and rancher on land homesteaded by his grandparents in 1902.
