Online lists compile key information about U.S. schools

Amarillo, TX - As the summer progresses and the next school year draws nearer, parents and students across the nation are eyeing their college choices.  And the White House has unveiled its most recent update of a three year-old online tool you can use to make those choices a little easier.

The U.S. Department of Education recently released the third and latest versions of its College Affordability and Transparency Lists, which compile key information like tuition, graduation rates, and loan default rates for 1,498 schools nationwide.

The Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 mandated the transparency lists to make cost, quality, and the reasons behind both more transparent prospective students.

After adjusting for inflation, college tuition rates are now almost six times what they were in 1980 and have doubled in just the last decade.

President Obama spoke to the rapidly rising tuition rates at a White House press conference on May 31.

"Since most of today's college students were born, tuition and fees at public universities have more than doubled," said Obama, "and these days, the average student who takes out loans to pay for four years of college graduates owes more than $26,000 ... that doesn't just hold back our young graduates. It holds back our entire middle class, because Americans now owe more on our student loans than we do on our credit cards. And those payments can last for years, even decades, which means that young people are putting off buying their first car, or their first house - the things that grow our economy and create new jobs."

If you'd like to see this year's list, you can find it at the link attached to this story.
