Okla. National Guard plans farewell for planes

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Two long serving military cargo planes that will no longer be flown by the Oklahoma National Guard will be remembered during an "Aircraft Turn-In" ceremony hosted by guard officials.

The ceremony with the two C-23 "Sherpa" light cargo aircraft will be Tuesday in the Army Aviation Hangar at Will Rogers Air National Guard Base in Oklahoma City.

More than 50 Oklahoma guardsmen have been assigned to the aircraft that were activated in 1996 at Westheimer Field in Norman. The group includes 17 pilots and 35 flight engineers.

The unit has deployed to Iraq three times since 2005.

Guard officials say the planes have a 29-foot hold that can carry up to 30 passengers in airline-type seats, four pallets of cargo, and up to 18 patients and medical personnel.
