Mac High School Sports Complex Burglarized

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON Okla_ Burglars hit the athletic complex at MacArthur High School and made off with thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

Lawton police say someone broke into the football building by breaking a window sometime Monday night. Wednesday, school administrators learned the thieves also struck the baseball press box.

They said the burglars took mostly electronics. Four laptops and a briefcase were taken from the football locker room. School officials noticed Wednesday a brand new PA system was taken from the baseball press box. The value of the items totals close to $5,000. However, the school, coaches, and players said the equipment was worth so much more.

"It is a loss for the coaches and the kids," MHS Principal Rick Owens said. It's a loss mainly for the kids, because it is a teaching tool. The coaches use them daily."

For Owens, the recent burglary is upsetting, mostly because it greatly impacts the school's football program only weeks before the start of the season.

"It's a real critical area for our coaches and our students," Owens said. "After practices and games, coaches bring all of the kids in there. They watch films. They break down films. They highlight films. They look for strengths and weaknesses for the football players."

Owens and the school's coaches have a positive outlook, despite the situation.

"It's going to set them back a little bit, but they are going to press forward," Owens said. "They are going to make it happen. They always do."

Owens said the PA system taken from the baseball press box is equipment that the school and boosters had worked hard to purchase.

"Obviously we are upset about it, but these kinds of things happen," Owens said. "We just have to pick up the pieces and move forward."

Owens said the school is diligently working to find ways to replace the equipment. To him, it's what he has to do to give the school's student athletes what was so wrongfully taken from them.

"They never stop," Owens said. "The coaches and the kids out there, they never stop. They are here all the time, and they are not going to let this hold them back."

At this time, Lawton police don't have any leads on who took the items, but MacArthur coaches are hoping that items can be recovered. If you have any information about these burglaries, call Crimestoppers at 580-355-INFO.
