Duncan Employee Allegedly Embezzles $50K

Posted: Updated:

DUNCAN Okla_ An employee of a family-owned business in Duncan stands accused of embezzling $50,000 over a year's time.

Prosecutors say the woman worked at Davis Air Conditioning. The owners suspected something was wrong, so they took a closer look at their financial records. It's unclear how long she'd been with the company, but she was there between April of last year and May of this year. That's also the time when owners started noticing very few cash deposits going into their business account.

It's never something an owner wants to deal with, but unfortunately, it's reality for those in charge at Davis Air Conditioning. Their money was allegedly being taken by a trusted employee.

Stephens County District Attorney Jason Hicks filed the charges.

"It's something that occurs on a frequent basis," Hicks said. "It's getting harder to trust people everyday."

Through bank records, Hicks said the company was able to prove the suspect, on many occasions throughout the year, failed to make almost $45,000 in cash deposits. The deposits are essential to a small business.

"It has the potential to impact the employees, the potential to impact the bottom line," Hicks said. " For some small businesses, it could mean the difference between them remaining open and closing."

Hicks said the woman also had a company credit card. She's accused of making her car payment with it in both April and May of this year. On top of that, she used the card to rack up over $5,000 in charges at Revolution Salon here in Lawton.

Hicks said it's unfortunate that some employees can't be trusted anymore.

"If somebody wants to, they're going to figure out a way to steal that money one way or another," Hicks said.

For that reason, it's very important to keep an even closer eye on the money that comes in and goes out of your business.

The woman has been charged with embezzlement, but the DA's office has asked that we not release her name at this time, because there still a warrant out for her arrest.

The DA's office did interview the suspect during the investigation, and Hicks said the woman admitted to taking the money. She said she needed it to pay bills. She also said the man she was in a relationship with at the time was very demanding and took all her money for himself.
