Shooting Ruled Homicide, Suspect in Custody

LAWTON Okla_ An overnight shooting turned into Lawton's 12th homicide of the year, after someone shot and killed 39-year-old Traci Young.

Police were called just after 11:30PM Wednesday to a home near Northwest 12th and Andrews. When they arrived, they found Traci Young lying inside the home with two gunshots wounds to the chest. Emergency responders took her to Comanche County Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Following the initial investigation of the victim's home and information from the medical examiner, police have arrested the victim's ex-husband, Bryan Pierce. The details about what led up to the shooting are still scarce, though. Wednesday night, a 911 call from a male caller told the dispatcher that a female victim had been shot in her home, and he thought she was dead. Police arrived to find just that, but they also found out the caller was her ex-husband, who was still at the scene. Police began to question him, and that's when they found their first suspect.

"Based on statements that he made at the scene, based on the evidence, what it appeared to us at the time, and what the medical examiner's office advised us, the ex-husband was placed under arrest and brought to jail on a charge of murder," LPD Captain Craig Akard said.

A neighbor told 7News Wednesday night she saw the man being taken into custody. She said that he seemed cooperative. The ex-couple's divorce was only made final in May of this year. Police are still working to determine if he's the only one involved.

"It is too early to say that we do in fact have all the parties involved," Akard said. "We believe that we have the individual responsible, but like I said, we are still conducting interviews to see exactly what the situation was and to see if in fact there is anyone else involved."

The crime scene was still active Thursday, as detectives tried to find all the missing pieces in this case.

"We still have control of the house at this time," Akard said. "We have not released the scene. We're still talking to anybody that may have information concerning the incident, the status of the victim, and the arrested person."

LPD will have control of the crime scene until the medical examiner is done with the autopsy, because its results could mean more evidence will need to be taken from the scene.

"Depending on what they find in the autopsy, there may be other evidence," Akard said. "We can't release the scene until we know that."

At this time, we still do not know why the ex-husband Bryan Pierce was at the home or what led up to the shooting. We know from multiple comments on our facebook that the victim Tracy Young was a talented singer with a loving spirit that will be greatly missed.

At this time, police are plan on submitting the case to the district attorney's office within the next few days.
