Posted: Updated:

LAWTON Okla_ A group of Lawton youngsters learned how dangerous Friday's flood waters could be.

Coincidentally, the children, aged 5-12, were at an environmental workshop at the Great Plains Technology Center. One of the topics happened to be flooding.

Associate Engineer of Storm Water for the City of Lawton Michael Hawkins had a captive audience.

"The biggest thing is being prepared," Hawkins said. "What do you do during a flood? If you have flash floods like we had today, those are very quick. They come up very quick. They can come up anywhere in town."

Hawkins told the children never to try to drive or walk through the water. You never can know how deep it is and you could be swept away.
