Amarillo, TX - The STAAR test is causing nearly 72,000 Texas students to be held back this Fall.
About 1 in 10 fifth and eighth graders across the state were unable to pass the math or reading tests after three attempts.
Canyon ISD tells us less than ten of their students will be retained this next school year.
The TEA says the failure rate for all students would have been higher if not for the low passing standards set for the initial years of the STAAR.
The standards will be gradually raised over the next few years.
