Lawton Man Arrested for Rape, Child Porn

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON Okla_ Lawton police uncovered child pornography inside a man's home, after going there to check on allegations of raping a child.

Wednesday night, police arrested 40-year-old Michael Neil as he was leaving his home in the Mission Village neighborhood in North Lawton. Detectives arrested him after someone called police and said they were concerned about what a young girl told them what she saw while she was inside Neil's home.

To protect the victim's identity, 7News won't say how the two were acquainted. Police did say the two did know each other. Police say the young girl was raped back in June, but the allegations weren't brought to light until two weeks ago. That's when an adult family member of the girl took action, once the child made some disturbing statements.

Police believe this man took advantage of a young girl at his home, and she kept quiet about the abuse for several weeks. Something Lawton Police Captain Craig Akard said isn't unusual.

"Usually when it's a juvenile, they're told, ‘Okay, if you tell someone, I'll hurt you' or ‘If you tell, they aren't going to believe you anyway,'" LPD Captain Akard said.

Akard said the abuse was brought to light after family members took it upon themselves to get the ball rolling.

"A couple of weeks ago, I received a phone call from an individual who told me her juvenile family member made a comment to her about someone making some inappropriate advances towards her," Akard said.

Once the girl was questioned by police, she told them Neil had made more than just advances towards her. They said it's something she didn't disclose to her family member, but she wanted to.

"If they let people know things, they are afraid or leery, and they give hints, it's the victim trying to tell you something without telling you something," Akard said.

Neil has not been found guilty or even formally charged with the allegations. Akard said if he is, his arrest could prevent Neil from hurting others while making it clear to his victim and other victims of sexual crimes that what happened to them wasn't their fault.

"Once someone is arrested for it once, they go to court, they are convicted, and they go to prison, it's a lot easier to explain to the child," Akard said. "That wasn't okay. That's not something that should have happened. It's not your fault, because you let it happen. The adult was just manipulative in the case."

Neil remains in the Lawton City Jail. He has yet to be formally charged. If sent to prison, Akard said criminals of child sexual abuse often have a difficult time in prison.  Other prisoners consider it the most despicable crime to commit. Neighbors told us Neil is a father himself, and they would see children at his home from time to time.

Neil was arrested on several charges including rape, child pornography, and indecent proposals to a child under 16.
