9th Annual Fiesta in Fuqua

Posted: Updated:

DUNCAN, Okla._

The city of Duncan is helping children prepare for the upcoming school year.

Saturday children and their families collected school supplies in the 9th annual Fiesta in Fuqua.

Each year the morning long celebration supplies kids with everything from free school supplies to complimentary immunizations. Many of the event coordinators are retired school teachers who believe preparing a child for the first day of school means the difference of success or failure.

"I had children that would come without a pencil, without crayons or anything the first day of school. And that's very hard for children to see others that have their new school supplies and them not to have it. So I think it just gets them started off in the new year on a positive note," said event coordinator, Daisy Lawler.

Each child was given a goodie bag full of supplies. Over 70 sponsors made the day possible.
