Lawton's First Annual "National Night Out"

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON,Okla_The Lawton Police Department and the community became a crime-fighting team Tuesday night.

It was all part of the department's "National Night Out" event at Lawton's Shepler Park. The LPD was joined by departments across the country to encourage communities to help prevent crime.

Police Chief James Smith says that's important because crime is not just a police issue, it's a community issue.

"Just to bring the community and the police department together to talk about crime and how we can prevent it," said Chief Smith.

Several vendors were on hand to offer crime tips including neighborhood watch programs which are another important crime fighting tool that really does work. Sullivan Village Neighborhood Watch President, Mary Bailey sees the difference it can make.

"We had a lot of crime when we first started neighborhood watch and now we have months that we have none," said Bailey.

Officers spent the evening speaking with participants, grilling burgers and hot dogs and even gave tours of the police station.  Lawton firefighters were also there to offer information on safety issues, all to help keep Lawton safe.
