Lawton Rangers Provide More Than Just Entertainment

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_For seventy-five years the Lawton Rangers have given back to our community and kept the spirit of cowboy culture alive. So as a part of their long standing tradition, Saturday morning they celebrated their legacy in style.

As a part nod to the city's birthday and a part celebratory lap for all those participating in the rodeo, the Lawton Rangers put on a first class parade.

Rodeo fans young and old turned out to watch the western themed parade, but the Rangers are out to do a little more than just put on a good show.

Parades can be full of excitement, and just like the rodeo there's the flashy appeal of entertainment and fun, but to the Lawton Rangers organization it's so much more. These events help their bottom line, and that bottom line is giving back.

"That's why we have the rodeo. So we can raise money to donate back to the community, " said Ranger Don Reed.

Don Reed saw the good work of the Rangers first hand. His daughter was part of the queen program,  and now he's giving back because they gave to him.

"We help sponsor a lot of kids for the Ag programs in the schools. We give scholarships out, we support their livestock shows..." Reed listed off.

But their intentions don't just stop with scholarships and charitable donations, there's a sort of educational aspect to their work as well. The Rangers keep the spirit of the west alive. That's something Reed says isn't just for nostalgia, but holds great importance for Lawton to never forget the hard work that has helped our community thrive.

"There's a lot of cattle ranches around here, there's a lot of farms around here and it's something that goes on day to day. We couldn't survive in our country without the people who raise the stock and provide food for the tables, " Reed explained.

Most of all, the Rangers are just about having a good time. They love their horses, they love their community, and they hope others do too.

"It gets the community together to try to make something happen that's exciting. And we do it so that people can enjoy the old time atmosphere with horses, the rodeo and try to keep that presence in our community, " said Reed.

Saturday night marks the fourth and final night of the Lawton Rangers Rodeo.
