Event to help physically disabled housing

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - A local foundation that helps those with physical disabilities lead more normal lives is looking for community support.

Texas Panhandle Independent Futures Foundation creates homes and opportunities for physically disabled young adults.

This weekend they're holding one of their biggest fundraising events in Amarillo to give that opportunity to even more individuals, their Million Dollar Duck Race. Money raised from the event will go towards future housing plans for TPIFF.

They already have one home built that houses three young men. John Kirby who lives in the home says he wants others to be able to live more independently like he now does.

"Well I think that it would allow them to have the same opportunities that I have and more, and take the same opportunities and go further than where they've been. They just want a shot to prove that they can do it," Kirby said.

Kirby says living in this home is a chance for him to join the walking community and be treated like normal.

The Million Dollar Duck Race will take place August 18th at Wonderland Park. Gates open at 1 pm. More information on the race and TPIFF can be found at http://www.independentfutures.org/ .
