Fire Destroys Walters Home

Posted: Updated:

A charred pile of rubble is all that was left of a home in Walters after it caught fire late Thursday afternoon. Friday police continued to investigate it's cause.

Firefighters were called to the vacant home at 15th and Oklahoma where the house was already in flames.

"There was cops blocking all up and down there," said neighbor Leonard Barish.

Barish watched as the home came full circle right before his eyes. From what it once was...

"I've been in this house; it used to be a two bedroom, one bath with a full kitchen and all," said Barish.

To what was left of it after it erupted into flames and crumbled down to its foundation.

"Pouring smoke and then it was all flames, the whole house was, flames were already up, the roof had already caved it," said Barish.

Barish said even though the home was destroyed he was happy no one was hurt, or worse killed in the fire, since it had recently been vacated. He said the tenants moved out not a day too soon.

"They were moving out on Wednesday night and then Thursday it was in flames."

And while he didn't know the people who lived here or the owners of the home---he couldn't help but share a heavy heart just looking at the once house. The smoke and flames reminded him of his own losses after he and his girlfriend became victims of fire.

"And it's sad to see someone's home like this, even though I've gone through it, my girlfriend has gone through the same thing, she lost everything in the house," said Barish.

The fire destroyed the entire home and even the yard. The flames spread to the edges of the home's fence line and even climbed to the tops of 20-foot trees.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring homes.
