Canyon considers water park

Posted: Updated:

Canyon, TX - During the summer months, about 150 people use Canyon's public pool on a daily basis - and as Canyon grows, some are saying its amenities need to grow along with it.

Canyon's public pool was built in the 1950s, and while it's served its purpose well over the last several decades, the Pool Committee says it's time for a new facility.

Andrew Neighbors is the manager of Canyon's city pool and is also a member of the specially-formed committee that is now recommending replacing the existing pool with a bigger and better facility.

"This swimming pool is 63 years old, and it's in dire need of being replaced," says Neighbors.  "So we're submitting a proposal for a themed water park in this same location."

The $5.2 million proposal would feature slides and other attractions and charge an entry fee in the range of five or six dollars. Building the facility would likely cost four to six million dollars, but that cost would theoretically be offset by admission fees.

Canyon city manager Randy Criswell says the commission will do extensive research in weighing that cost against the potential benefits for Canyon's quality of life and its economy.

"If we do this, it's got to be intended number one: for Canyon to grow, and number two: probably with an expectation that at least for some period of time, there will be people coming here from other places, from Amarillo and maybe Hereford, and Happy, and Tulia, and other places."

If the project were approved, funding it could be done several ways, but voters would have a say on how to do so in a bond election.

"We did a survey last year here at the pool," says Neighbors, "and we asked everyone that came in, 'What would you guys want in a new pool?' So we've used that research to give to the commission, because we think that's more important than anything, is what the people of Canyon want."

According to the pool committee's survey, 92 percent would be in favor of building a new facility.
