Local officials prepare for "I Count"

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON,Okla_For the second year in a row, local officials are preparing to canvas the community to get an accurate count of the number of homeless veterans here.

They gathered Thursday night at the Lawton Veterans Center to plot their strategy.  Last year's survey found 127 veterans who were either homeless or at-risk of being homeless.

Last year's survey found 127 veterans who were either homeless or at-risk of being homeless.  It created an opportunity to connect those veterans with the specific help they need to change their lives.

Jervis Jackson, Director, Southwest Oklahoma Continuum of Care, explains it's not just a matter of accounting for them.

"We've done everything we could over the course of the last year to not only identify them, but having identified them, then assist them, and improve upon their situation. If they were literally homeless, our goal was to house.  If they were at risk of being homeless, our goal was to eliminate that risk,"  said Jackson.

Jackson said information collected in last year's count allowed them to get funding for housing vouchers that helped 10 homeless families get off the streets.

This year's survey is set for September 11th.  Volunteers will gather for a training session September 4th.
