Silent protest at city council over library funding

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON,Okla_Lawton's City Council also heard from supporters of the Lawton Public Library, who were upset over a cut in funding during the budget debate.

Many brought books to the council chambers, and wore 'Library Lover' stickers. This was part of a silent protest, while a spokesperson, Patty Neuwirth, pleaded to the council for a change of heart.

The city's decision also led a loss of matching funds from the state, so there's not enough money to buy new books this year.

Kay Foster, a library supporter, spoke about the importance of funding for the library.

"To buy no new resources for the year just seems we're ignoring some of the essentials of life, and civilization, as we know it.  I know we have problems in terms of finances in the City of Lawton, but we need to recognize what's really important," said Foster.

Because the item was not on the council's agenda and was only discussed during the public comments portion, the council could not take any action on the matter.
