Okla Poison Control Center Says Snakebites Up

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Oklahoma Poison Control Center says snakebites are up this year due to more activity by snakes and people.

The center says 142 snakebites were reported between January and early August. Last year, only 126 snake bites were reported during the same time period, and there were only 122 in 2011.

The center's medical director, Dr. Bill Battle, says wet, mild weather this year has increased contact between people and snakes.

The food snakes consume, like frogs, are more plentiful because there are more insects for the frogs to eat. And mild temperatures have encouraged people to go outdoors more often than the past two years, when summer temperatures frequently topped 100 degrees.

Battle says the most frequent bites are from copperheads and pygmy rattlesnakes. No deaths have been reported.
