New flu vaccine may be hard to find

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - A new flu vaccine that offers more protection has hit the market. But, it may be difficult to come by here in the panhandle.

A new version of the flu vaccine that covers four, rather than the typical three strains of influenza is available this year. But it might be hard to find.

Martin-Tipton Pharmacy LLC says they ordered their vaccine supply thinking the new version would not be on the market. They say, they along with others might not have it available this flu season. Doctors tell us the reason is because it was approved so late by the Food and Drug Administration.

"Now the problem is, we weren't sure these were going to be FDA approved in time. The pharmacist have to make their orders, sometimes months in advance. So it's a little bit of a catch as to whether we're going to be able to get those or not. Probably the best bet locally is going to be in FluMist, which is a nasal version of the flu shot," Todd Bell, M.D., West Texas Influenza Center director said.

All FluMist this year will contain four-fold protection.

Dr. Bell suggests if you can't take FluMist or find the four strain shot, go ahead and get vaccinated with the three rather than waiting until it is available.
