Nancy Tanner announces candidacy

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - A new candidate has stepped into the ring in the race for the next Potter County Judge.

Potter County Judge Arthur Ware will be stepping down at the end of his term next December. And as of today, there are two candidates vying for the position. But with more than a year left in that race, there's plenty of time for more challengers to step in.

Former county employee Nancy Tanner announced her candidacy earlier this afternoon in downtown Amarillo.

Tanner served as Potter County's Court Coordinator for twenty years, and before that worked for the City of Amarillo and two law firms. Tanner says that combined experience gave her an intimate understanding of county government and the responsibilities of a judge.

"I think the county is run really well, and it always has been," says Tanner.  "We've been without a leader for three years because of Judge Ware's illness, and I just want to get back in there and do the right thing and help the people of this community - they deserve to have a leader."

Last month, former Amarillo mayor Debra McCartt announced her candidacy for the position, citing her years of experience as a city commissioner and a passion for public service.

"I decided to go ahead and run for Potter County Judge because it's something that I have a heart for; to serve this community, and now especially this county of Potter County," said McCartt in an August 8th interview.  "I had a great opportunity to work for the city of Amarillo and its citizens, and I am ready to step up and work for this county of Potter County."

Some of the major responsibilities of a county judge include setting the budget, presiding over the commissioners court, and judging probate and mental competency hearings.

The filing period for candidates starts November 9th, and the primaries will be held March 4th.
