Annual chamber barbecue growth over the years

Amarillo, Texas - Some of the area's best cooking teams are teaming up to help the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce.

The annual Amarillo Chamber Good Times Barbecue kicks off its 18th year Thursday with more than 100 area businesses competing for your attention.

The cook-off started as a competition between several panhandle chamber of commerce's for one to have the chance to cook for the governor at Panhandle Days in Austin. The event grew from just 14 booths the first year, to now more than 100 teams cooking up everything from ribs, to pork loins, to brisket, and it draws thousands to downtown Amarillo each year.

We caught up with Richard Dyer who was the winner of the first chamber barbecue, and has still been cooking every year since.

"It's one of those events that you are blessed to be in. It's good for the panhandle. It's good for Amarillo. It's good for the businesses that are down here. I mean it's good exposure, good networking," Dyer said.

Dyer says businesses are able to interact with one another, and put themselves out in the community.

If you would like to attend this year's BBQ, tickets are $25 in advanced and $30 the day of. Food will be served from 5 to 8 downtown Thursday evening.
