City Commission approves tax increase in Amarillo

Posted: Updated:

The proposal that will increase tax rates in Amarillo has been approved.

Tuesday afternoon, the City Commission voted to increase tax rates by 7.89 percent, which means residents would pay an additional $21 for a $100,000 home every year.

As a result of the increase, the city will see the addition of 13 new police officers. "Any time we put additional officers out on the street, I think it's going to be beneficial to the public," said Corporal Jerry Neufeld with the Amarillo Police Department.

The city will also see the addition of eight fire fighters and three animal control officers.

But, not everyone thinks the city should be making the increase. William Sumerford, a concerned Amarillo citizen, told us he thinks the decision should have been made by the people.

"It would make government better within Amarillo if citizens were allowed to vote when the city wants to dig deeper into their pockets."

City Commissioners say their decision to increase taxes came after four weeks of discussion and two public hearings.
