Amarillo man among the eight dead in Colorado floods

AMARILLO - More than 400 people remain unaccounted for following the deadly downpours across the state of Colorado.
Eight people are confirmed dead, and one of them was an Amarillo native.

54-year-old Danny Mike Davis loved the great outdoors. Relatives say he was a talented carpenter, a brilliant computer programmer, and a great father to his six children and nine grandchildren, most of whom live in East Texas.

He was born and raised in Amarillo, graduated from Palo Duro High School, but had been living in Colorado Springs for the last six years.

"It had always been his dream to get to the pretty country up there. So that's what he did," Davis's mother Edith Davis said.

Edith and Davis's sister Debbie didn't even know flood waters were affecting the Colorado Springs area. So when an Amarillo police officer knocked last week to inform them Davis was found dead in a flooded creek they were shocked.

"He used to like to take walks there, and a couple years ago he sent me a picture of the place he loved so much. But that was the place that they did recover his body," Edith said.

The flood zone includes 17 Colorado counties; an area about the size of Delaware.

More than 15,000 homes are destroyed, more than 400 people are still missing, and more than 12,000 people are living in shelters.

The Davis is family is praying for all those victims while mourning their beloved son and brother.

"He had such a good sense of humor and would just make every him just comfortable and break out and laugh," Debbie said.

Davis didn't have insurance, so a memorial fund is set up at Amarillo National Bank to help pay for Davis's Amarillo funeral services.

You can help by asking to donate to the Danny Mike Davis memorial fund at any Amarillo National Bank branch or online at this website.

Funeral services for Davis will be this Thursday at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park funeral home and cemetery.

Several crews responded to a series of fires along Highway 7 near the Comanche/Stephens County line.  Crews still have not determined how they started, but they suspect the fires were ignited by a vehicle that could have been inadvertently dragging a chain, or a trailer that was sending out sparks. Firefighters were able to get it under control and keep it from spreading too far.
