AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — State Sen. Wendy Davis has begun the slow roll out of her campaign for Texas governor with an e-mail to supporters to spread the word and raise money.

The Fort Worth Democrat stopped short of making a formal announcement Wednesday, but said she would reveal her decision on Oct. 3. The move clearly signals that she intends to join the race.

In her message, Davis thanked her supporters and said she was excited about what they can do together in the future. The slow roll out has become a hallmark of modern campaigns that want to build buzz for their candidate.

No Democrat has won statewide office in Texas in 20 years and experts say Davis will need to raise $40 million. Republican candidate Greg Abbott has raised $20 million.
