Teen In Australian's Slaying Seeks Juvenile Status

Posted: Updated:

DUNCAN, Okla. (AP) - The attorneys for 1 of 3 Oklahoma teens charged in the shooting death of an Australian baseball player are asking that their client be tried as a juvenile.

Michael Dewayne Jones is charged with being an accessory to murder in last month's shooting death of Christopher Lane. Jones, who is 17, is now charged as a youthful offender in adult court.

Jones' attorneys reportedly filed a motion Monday asking that their client be certified as a juvenile. If convicted as a juvenile, Jones could be released from custody when he's 18.

Two other teens are charged as adults with first-degree murder in Lane's death.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a judge delayed Jones' preliminary hearing until Nov. 6. It had been set for next week.
