Energy companies seek compromise in prairie chicken listing

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - The battle between prairie chicken conservation and the oil, gas and wind energy companies is heating up.

Five states, including Texas, have submitted the fourth draft of a conservation plan for the lesser prairie chicken.

This comes after the bird was proposed to be listed as "threatened" under the endangered species act. If the species is classified as endangered, stricter federal regulations for land use will be put in place.

"The plan focuses on targeting conservation in specific areas so we keep those prairie chickens on the landscape, we keep those healthy ecosystems and we keep development and industry vibrant and growing in the region," Sean Kyle with Texas Parks and Wildlife said.

The plan provides a framework for energy industries to enroll in, which helps protect the lesser prairie chicken's habitat and protect the companies from potential federal regulations.
