Amarillo bike pub crawl raises money for handicap children

Posted: Updated:

Handicap children in the Amarillo area could soon be getting their hands on a few bikes of their own, thanks to the efforts of one local group.

Sunday, about 500 people participated in the Fifth Annual "Pedal Pint Night" hosted by 575 Pizzeria. The People, Pints and Pedals event is a pub crawl on bikes that goes all around Amarillo, from 575, to Golden Light Cafe, Crush and then the Amarillo National Bank parking garage downtown.

It's an event that has been so successful in years past, one Amarillo group called AMBUCS has decided to use part of the money raised to buy handicap trikes for children in need.

"The trikes we raise money to buy are $600 apiece, and the money we raise here is enough to buy about 3 or 4 individuals each year," said Brian Kelleher, owner of 575 Pizzeria. "And that just makes a world of difference to those young kids and wounded warriors and stuff like that, that need these bikes."

AMBUCS is a non-profit organization that works with local therapists to find children who need these therapy bikes.
