City of Amarillo to crack down on unpaid parking tickets

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - A parking ticket pile-up in Amarillo is forcing the city to crack down on drivers with unpaid fines.

The city's new initiative is aimed at drivers with six or more unpaid parking tickets.  As of Friday afternoon, there were more than 5,000 outstanding parking tickets, issued to both people and businesses. Some with hefty fines that will only continue to rack up should their vehicle get impounded.

"If someone has a lot of tickets outstanding or even a few, the added charges of the impound fee will make those tickets be a lot higher, will make a lot heavier penalty for that," said Sgt. Brent Barbee with the Amarillo Police Department.

Although clearing the backlog of tickets would bring in thousands of dollars for the city, officials said it's not all about the money.

"The average parking ticket is about 25 bucks so I don't think anybody is going to wealthy off of that," added Sgt. Barbee. "But there needs to be some way to make people comply with the law. These fines make people comply with the law."

The city is pushing this message early so drivers still have time to pay their fines, but come October 15th, it's either take care of your tickets, or get towed.
