Russell Named Lawton Assistant City Manager

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON Okla_ The City of Lawton has a brand new assistant city manager Wednesday.

Jim Russell is making the move after working with the City of Lawton for seven years as Director of Human Resources. He was chosen for the new position by City Manager Bryan Long after applicants were reviewed by a panel of city officials.

He's been working directly with the city manager on several projects for nearly a year, but the announcement became official Wednesday morning. Russell said it's just another day at work, as he continues to serve the city he loves so much.

Russell has lived in Lawton his entire life. He said there's no place else he'd rather be.

"It's been an unrealized dream to be a part of my city that I grew up in," Russell said. "Now it's going to be realization."

Russell comes to the city manager office from human resources, an area that helped him snag the new position. His duties will now include everything from neighborhood meetings to social media, which are tasks that have very specific purposes.

"One of the things that the city manager is going to be relying on me to do is to just change the image people have, the perceptions they have about the City of Lawton," Russell said. "We have so much going for us."

He hopes changing those perceptions will bring big change to the city by way of growth.

"A large part of that is going to be getting some sustainable industry in here that will be around for a while and bringing jobs and some economic growth to the citizens of Lawton," Russell said. "So, they will continue to stay here and raise their families as well."

By speaking to folks in town and making sure their voices are heard, Russell hopes the dedication he has for the City of Lawton shows through the community's progress.

"As a hometown boy and someone who's played in the streets of Lawton growing up, I got strong ties here," Russell said. "My family's here. Being raised here, I want to see some success come to my hometown. I'm looking forward to those opportunities."

Russell really is a jack of all trades at City Hall. He will also be working on ADA compliances within the city, so that every aspect of town, from parks to city hall and other buildings, will be fully accessible for every citizen.
