Secretary of State visits Amarillo, talks about Election Identification Certificates

Posted: Updated:

As voters get ready to head to the polls, Secretary of State John Steen, is reminding people to bring a photo identification card.

After day one of early voting, only 74 Election Identification Certificates were issued throughout the state, but there were over a thousand inquiries.

"Many of the people that are inquiring are finding out that they really don't need one. It's part of the education process that you go through," Steen said.

It's a process Steen says he has been working on to try and make it simple for everyone.

"What we are trying to do is make it as convenient as possible for people to get an EIC, an Elections Identification Certificate," he told us.

This is the first year voters in Texas will be required to show photo ID in order to vote. To help make sure everyone who needs that ID can have one, the Department of Public Safety is helping out.

"The Department's role in the EIC or Election Identification Certificates is to issue those if someone doesn't have those other forms of identification," Trooper Chris Ray said.

Already acceptable forms of identification include a drivers license, a personal identification card, a concealed handgun license, a U.S. Military ID card, a U.S. citizenship certificate or a passport.

Residents who don't have any of these form of identification can now register for an EIC. To help make things convenient, there will be mobile stations set up throughout the area, where DPS personnel will be issuing the certificates.

"Our mobile stations, we are setting them up throughout the Panhandle. Yesterday we were in Canadian, we are going to be in Amarillo and Canyon and we are going to randomly send our people out so that we can reach more people and make sure that they do have the proper credentials," Trooper Ray said.

On Friday the 25th and Monday the 28th, between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. DPS personnel will be at the Comanche Trails Church and Randall County Tax Office.

You can also go to the DPS office to pick up an Election Identification Certificate, if you don't already have a photo ID card.
