CENTRAL HIGH, Okla._ The doors of the Central High school district's new gym opened tonight after more than 15 months of construction.
The new building includes a regulation size court, men's and women's locker rooms, as well as well as seating for up to 1,000 people.
There were smiles everywhere out there tonight as hundreds of people came out to see the new gym; an addition many believe has been needed for years.
It was a mad dash to see the interior of the gym. It will be used by all schools in the district, including the elementary school.
"This has been a long time coming for the school and the community, and it just shows the support we have here at Central High, said Superintendent Bennie Newton. "I don't have enough words to describe how I feel right now."
But some of the kids at the opening event had a lot of positive things to say.
"It's a bunch of blue and gold everywhere, and horses, it looks so pretty," said Presleigh Bowles, a Central High student.
The state of the art facility is all new and includes a regulation size basketball court, locker rooms, an expanded lobby area and seating for more than 1,000 people.
The district used a bond issue to pay for the gym, which is estimated to have cost upwards of $3.5 million. The district used the rest of the $5.9 million bond to replace heating and air conditioning in the high school.
