'I Got Flowers Today,' Domestic Violence Forum in Lawton

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON,Okla_Thursday night many had the opportunity to recognize and stop a problem that plagues far too many households, domestic violence.

The Lawton Police Department and the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women hosted a forum entitled "I Got Flowers Today."

Lawton Polices Chief James Smith  hopes the forum will not only educate people about domestic violence but also  create awareness for the growing problem in our area.

"The physical don't start off right away, it starts off with you're ugly, you're fat, no one wants you, where are you going? where you been? Let me see your cell phone, it starts off subtle and escalates to minor pushing and shoving before escalating to real violence," explained Smith.

Thursday's forum included speakers from survivors of domestic violence. They shared stories of hope and ways to overcome abusive situations.

Smith says they hope to put an end to the circle of violence. He says often times children witness domestic violence in their homes and learn to handle conflict with violence  later in life.
