Amarillo voters attend forum for Texas Lt. Gov. candidates

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - A few candidates for the Texas Lt. Governor seat to be voted on next year spent time in Amarillo Saturday.

The four candidates include incumbent David Dewhurst, Senator Dan Patrick, Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Commissioner Todd Staples.

Both Patrick and Staples were in town for the forum Saturday to discuss and inform local voters about some of the hot button issues they hope to address if elected, including state budgeting, illegal immigration and down-sizing government.

"Well voter turnout has been relatively low over recent years. We need more people to become informed, and to vote," said Terry Harmon, Secretary for the Amarillo Tea Party Patriots. "If you don't like the candidates we have in office, it's because not enough people learned about them and learned about their positions on these issues, and didn't turn out to vote."

The Lt. Governor position is one of the most powerful positions in the Texas government. The elected person determines what legislation gets to the floor of the Texas Senate and also appoints Senate Committee Chairman.
