SNAP food benefits to be reduced in November

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Starting November 1st, 2013, SNAP food benefits will be reduced across the state of Texas.

Because the temporary increase in benefits from the federal stimulus, passed in 2009, is expiring SNAP food benefits will be reduced in Texas by an average of 5 percent.

Depending on the family size the amount of the drop will vary. This means, more families may be turning to services like the high plains food bank.

We spoke with the executive director about what the cuts mean for families. "For a household of 4 its about a $36 dollar cut. Which may not seem like a lot but when your average benefit is about only $250 dollars ... that is a big cut ... especially for those who are on the fence who are living paycheck to paycheck. So it's just important that we get that out there and ask for everyone's help" - Zack Wilson.

Wilson says now more than ever they can't receive enough donations. He also says not only do they need them now during the holidays but also for coming years.
