Smaller needle makes flu shots less painful

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) -

Amarillo residents now have another, less painful option when it comes to flu shots. An intradermal needle is now being offered.

The needle has been around for a couple years, but it is just now making an appearance in Amarillo. The intradermal needle is extremely tiny compared to the needle used in the standard flu vaccine.

The needle pierces only skin instead of going through muscle. Doctors say the needle is small enough that it doesn't hurt when injected. Though it is less painful, the intradermal flu shot does have a couple side effects.

"The downside of it is you have more of a chance of having some skin reaction," said Dr. Todd Bell. He said people can expect extra redness and swelling after injection.

Adults between the ages of 18 and 64 are eligible for the intradermal flu shot.

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is one of the only places offering the shot in Amarillo.
