Driver killed on I-40 while making an illegal turn

Amarillo, TX - An illegal U-turn left one person dead Monday afternoon on Interstate 40 west of Amarillo.

A car heading west tried to make a U-turn on an emergency vehicle crossing just past Soncy Road, when it was rear-ended by a semi truck.

The driver of the car was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers say 53 year-old passenger Gerard Nzahumunyurwa, of Amarillo, was killed in the crash.  He was reportedly not wearing a seat belt.

The driver, 44 year-old Emmanuel Musavyimana, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The semi truck driver was not injured in the crash.
