Atmos Energy is "Sharing the Warmth" with local families in need

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - As winter weather rolls around, Atmos Energy is helping area residents who struggle to keep their heat turned on.

Atmos is encouraging customers to take part in its "Sharing the Warmth" program this winter. To combat the costs for people who can't afford to turn up the heat, Atmos is asking customers to round up their monthly payment to the next highest dollar. It will then donate the extra money to local organizations that provide utility assistance programs.

"Since October 1 and as of November 15, we've received 504 calls for utility assistance," said 211 Texas Panhandle director Courtney Foster. "So the need is big."

Catherine Meck of the Salvation Army said her organization faces similar utility assistance needs. "What people don't realize is that if someone rents a home and they can't pay their electric bill, their pipes burst, and their landlord throws them out. And what we're trying to do is keep people in their homes, warm and safe throughout this holiday season."

Atmos Energy has been "Sharing the Warmth" since 2000 and said it sees a sizeable participation from the community each year.
