Xcel Energy wind project approved, said to help lower customer's fuel cost

Posted: Updated:

AMARILLO - Xcel Energy now has the green light to move forward on a wind purchase that will help lower customer's bills.

New Mexico regulators have given final approval for the purchase of wind energy generated in Roosevelt County. Xcel will also purchase wind from facilities in Hansford and Ochiltree Counties, as well as Dewey and Blaine Counties in Western Oklahoma.

"It used to be wind for the sake of wind, but now it comes in the form of savings for our customers," said Xcel spokesman Wes Reeves.

The plans approval will help reduce cost over the next 20 years Reeves explained.

"Were going to be able to save around $590 million for our customers in fuel cost," he said.

The plan to purchase 698 megawatts of wind energy for the Texas-New Mexico system was announced in July.

Xcel expects to have this new wind operation up and running sometime in 2014.
