Federal judge grants stay in former Swisher County Sheriff civil case

Posted: Updated:

A federal judge has granted a stay in the civil case against a former law enforcement official in our area accused of inappropriate conduct.

Ex-Swisher County Sheriff Emmett Benavidez had asked for the stay against the lawsuit brought against him by two of his female employees, who claim he engaged in sexually explicit behavior in front of them.

Those employees tried to prevent the order to stay, but a judge has decided the civil case will be delayed while Benavidez faces criminal charges of official oppression in Randall County.
