Wanted driver hits parked car in high speed chase

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._ A man led a high-speed chase through northwest Lawton after a sheriff's deputy tried to pull him over for rolling through a stop sign.

The chase didn't last long, however, because the driver lost control of his car on NW Cache Rd., going over the road and slamming into a parked SUV.

He then took off on foot from the scene of the crash into a nearby neighborhood.

"I was doing my route and I saw someone run past me and I didn't get a good look at the guy," said Jerimy Whitley, a mailman delivering in the area at the time of the pursuit.

Another man said the suspect came on his property asking to use his phone.

Just three blocks away, at the scene of the crash, investigators got tipped off to something be tossed by into a dumpster just feet away from where the scene of the crash.

The sheriff confirmed Monday night a gun was found.

"We believe it is stolen out of Louisiana. So, that'll be another charge on him," said Comanche County Sheriff Kenny Stradley.

Lawton police officers were able to locate the man they later identified as Jamel Liddell, 28, Lawton.

This isn't his first run in with the law, either. He was charged in 2009 with possession of a firearm and also has burglary charges on his record.

He did have two warrants out for his arrest – one from 2008 on drug related charges and a more recent warrant for possession of a firearm, according to the sheriff.

Liddell is facing a list of charges after today's chase, including, another charge for possessing a firearm, resisting police, and reckless driving. He is currently in the Comanche County Detention Center.
