Cameron lights up Christmas tree in annual tradition

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._ The kickoff to the holiday season continued tonight at Cameron University where they lit the campus Christmas tree.

With just a few more days left in the semester, the public was invited to attend the annual event that has become a tradition at Cameron.

"It's the beginning of the holiday season," said Dr. John McArthur, university president.

There wasn't a shortage of fun things to do for the kids and those kids-at-heart, either. The lighting took center stage, rightfully so, but, cookies, s'mores and the smell of hot chocolate couldn't be ignored.

Hundreds of people turned out and the majority took advantage of the activities, including carriage rides though campus.

"I think it's great," said Lisa Jones. "It's a great way to kick off Christmas (and) be a part of decorating the cookies and the Christmas tree lighting."

As the fall semester comes to a close, students said the tree lighting is the perfect event to get them in the holiday spirit as they crunch for final exams.

"I think everyone just feels different when the tree is here because it's like Christmas time (and) we can finally relax," said junior Mikaela Emmells-Green.

President McArthur was thrilled with the turnout and the support from the community: "It's not the buildings that make a campus, it's the people," said McArthur. "A festive event like this reminds us what makes a university special."
