Lawton police arrested a mother after she left her young son alone and in a cold car.
Police said they were flagged down by a woman who said a boy had been left alone in a car in a gas station parking lot. The woman told police she stopped to get gas at the Stripes gas station at Sheridan and Cache Road, when she noticed the boy alone and crying. The woman believed she saw the boy's mother inside the gas station putting on her makeup.
The young boy was found crying in the car after police went to investigate. Police said the car's doors were left unlocked, and the car's heat was turned off in the 45-degree weather.
The boy's mother, Betty Smith ran outside and told officers she had driven from Stillwater to check in with the Department of Corrections. Smith was arrested for child neglect. The boy was placed in state custody.
