Canyon collision involving police officer

Posted: Updated:

Drinking and driving always increases around the holidays and it may be to blame for a recent crash where an officer was injured.

The collision happened December 7th, 2013, around 9 at the intersection of 4th and 23rd Street in Canyon.

Officer Anthony Gonzalez was on duty and heading west on 4th when his vehicle was struck by Cole Taylor Gossett of Fort Stockton.

Police say Gossett ran a red light and hit the officer's vehicle.

He was then arrested for a first time offense of a driving while under the influence of alcohol and booked into the Randall County Jail.

Gonzalez was taken to Northwest hospital and was later released.

Chris Ray with the Texas Department of Public Safety says they see an increase in drinking and driving around this time of year.

"People are going to drink and party and celebrate and we know they are going to do that. So we just ask the public, if you are going to do that, have a sober driver. Call someone, call a cab, whatever you have to do. Just don't get behind the wheel of that car and drive."

Ray says around this time of year more troopers will be looking for drunk drivers on the road.
