LAWTON, Okla._Police say a material murder witness is in the Lawton jail Wednesday morning for trying to kidnap his ex-girlfriend.
The woman tells police Carlos Melendez-Salazar forced her into his car and beat her as they drove down the street. Investigators say they got a tip that he was at a Lawton casino Tuesday night. Officers found him and took him into custody.
Salazar was named a material witness in Jonathan Shepherd's homicide in may after police say he witnessed the crime.
Carlos Melendez-Salazar's ex-girlfriend called police Monday, and said Salazar forced her into his car and then physically assaulted her as they drove down the street. The woman told police she jumped out of the car and called for help. Police said the woman suffered visible injuries. Salazar was not located.
Salazar was arrested in late October and later charged with threatening another witness in the same murder case he's set to testify in. Salazar witnessed the shooting death of Jonathan Shepherd back in May. The man charged in that murder, Kenneth Nobles, is in jail awaiting his preliminary hearing. Nobles had been out on bond, but was arrested for having a stolen gun last week. He's due for a hearing in January to have his bond revoked.
