Geronimo Opens New Animal Shelter

Posted: Updated:

GERONIMO Okla_ The town of Geronimo opened the doors to its long awaited new animal shelter Wednesday.

It's been in the works for more than five years now, since Cotton Electric first gave them a grant to get the ball rolling. Then after more donations from local businesses, they started construction last summer and were finally able to move dogs from the old shelter in last Friday.

The new facility is a great building that will definitely take care of the animals they house. 7News went back to the old building to compare. From fences with holes, to a small shack, to being in the middle of a residential area, the new one is in phenomenal shape compared to it.

The old shelter for Geronimo was not only a nuisance for those living next to it, but also for the animals that were in it. The new one is a proper place to hold animals.

"The other one, really… it's outdoors," Geronimo Mayor Ed Mounts said. "They do have shelter, but it wasn't what is needed for the animals. This is a huge step up. It's got heat, air and electricity, and the other one didn't have anything."

Mounts said since Geronimo is a town in the country, a problem they face is people coming out and dropping off unwanted animals. He said it won't fix people dropping them off, but it will help with keeping strays off the streets.

That's a problem kennel keeper Tim Elkins said can get dangerous.

"They might bite somebody, because I have had several dogs that were vicious," Elkins said. "I'm currently trying to catch two dogs who have tried to bite people. I have a large dog trap set out to try to capture them."

Right now, 6 dogs are housed in the new building and are available for adoption. If you visit the shelter and find one you like, just head a block over to the city hall and you can adopt it. If you're looking for a Christmas idea, Mayor Mounts said a simple donation of a 50lb bag of dog food will get you a dog up until Christmas.

"They still have to get their shots and do the needed things for the animal, but we'll let them adopt for a bag of dog food," Mounts said.

Mayor Mounts said they built the building a little bigger to have room for improvements. One of those improvements is to put the equipment needed where a vet could treat the animals on site if needed.

There are only dogs at the facility now, but Mounts said it can take in cats and even goats that may get loose in the town.
