Controlled burn aims to protect Lake Meredith

Posted: Updated:

Fritch, TX - The National Park Service and local fire departments are conducting a controlled burn at Lake Meredith Thursday and Friday.

The burn will encompass 2,000 acres of land just north of the Sanford Dam.

The National Park Service said the burn will reduce hazardous fuel for fires in the park area. The high amount of moisture received in the last six months is causing an above average growth of grass, resulting in several areas of concern.

The National Park Service is enlisting the help of local fire departments because of recent federal budget cuts. The list of fire departments includes Fritch, Borger, Stinnett, Amarillo, Hutchinson County, Potter County and Randall County.

During the burn, some areas may be closed to the public depending on smoke visibility.
