Couple Awaits Ruling in Same Sex Marriage Case

Posted: Updated:

TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ A same-sex couple from Tulsa knew filing a lawsuit seeking the right to marry in Oklahoma would be an uphill battle.

But Mary Bishop and Sharon Baldwin never thought the lawsuit would still be in district court nine years later.

Bishop and Baldwin filed the lawsuit for the right to marry in November 2004, months after Oklahomans overwhelming voted to pass an amendment to the state Constitution banning same-sex marriage.

Another couple in the lawsuit is challenging a section of the Defense of Marriage Act that says individual states don't have to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions.

Baldwin says the judge is holding the rights of gays and lesbians in Oklahoma hostage by not ruling on the case.

The judge did not return a message seeking comment.
